September is National Wilderness Month, a month celebrating the protected lands that preserve the natural landscape around us.
National Wilderness Areas are left in their natural state. They protect wildlife and plant life from encroaching development, giving them a natural landscape to thrive in. Many of the national parks incorporate wilderness areas, but the parks make up only a small percentage of the total wilderness areas in the country.
Outside of Alaska, which contains a huge amount of wilderness on its own, the total area of designated wilderness in the United States is equivalent to the size of California. That may sound like a lot of land, but it’s truly only a small percentage of the total land in the country. Thankfully, wilderness areas are spread around, giving you more opportunities to experience our landscape in its natural form.
This month’s book display at the circulation desk celebrates National Wilderness month and encourages you to enjoy go outside and enjoy nature!
