Cahokia Mounds State Historic Park
The air photo above shows "downtown" Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Collinsville, Illinois. Fox Mound (right) and Round Top Mound are shown in the foreground, while Monks Mound is in the background. Monks Mound is the largest prehistoric mound in the United States, covering 14 acres at its base and rising to 100 feet above the Mississippi floodplain. The site flourished between AD 800 to 1400, and probably had about 20,000 people at it apogee. The air photo was taken from a doorless, bubble-top helicopter in 1979 by the late Dr. Melvin L. Fowler.
