The Church of the Brethren first sent missionaries to China in 1908. Two years later they established a mission station in Pingding, Shanxi Province. Brethren missionaries engaged in agricultural, medical, educational, and evangelistic work in China for decades, establishing a local church in spite of significant hardships including famine, plague, local warlord violence, and Japanese occupation. The church and mission in China ended under Communist rule in the early 1950s.
