 1. The initial query should include 2-5 terms. Use prepositions between concepts to avoid too many words within a single phrase. Use AND and OR as precisely as possible. (SciFinder Scholar generates synonyms and automatic truncation for keywords. ex: a search for 'tropical plants' will produce hits for tropical and tropics as well as tropanes.)

2.  Look carefully at the concepts that have been identified generated by SciFinder Scholar in order to verify that the algorithm has been applied in the intended manner.

3. 'Closely associated' means that all the concepts are in the title, in the same sentence in the abstract or in a single index heading field. 'Anywhere in the reference' means that the concepts are present somewhere in the title, abstract, and index fields. The assumption is that the closer the concepts are, the more directly related they are.

4. 'As entered' does not search on variant spellings, singulars/plurals or truncation.

5. Sometimes using a single search term is better. One can analyze/refine the search later.

Analyze References in SciFinder Scholar

1.  Analyze by journal name to determine key journals in a particular research area.

2. Categorize by Index terms to focus your search.

3. Analyze by author name and/or company to determine key individuals in a particular field.

4.  Analyze by publication date to get the oldest or newest research.

Browsing Table of Contents

Click on Explore select Journal and enter the name of the journal. Enter the publication year and press Search.
